Notes for David I "the Saint" , King of Scotland
General Note
|
During his reign Norman influences prevailed in both church and state. He was outstanding in
his generosity to the church, founding several monasteries. He also founded the burghs of Edinburgh,
Berwick, Roxburgh and Stirling.
David encouraged the spread of feudal tenure through
the settlement of Normans, English, and Flemings and favoured Anglo-Norman institutions in
government. Celtic resentment at these policies led to rebellions in the north but these were
crushed.
Intervention on behalf of the empress Matilda in England brought defeat at
the battle of the Standard (1138), but David eventually won recognition of his claims to the
northern counties of England from the future Henry II.
